Northland Imaging Centers of Kansas City

At our North Oak location we continue to offer Open MRI

"With our system, you can enjoy the benefits of an MRI without the fear of confinement - no tunnel - no worries!"

The latest in High Field MRI Scanning is now available at our Liberty FacilityLiberty location now open, offering High-Field MRI
Our newest location offers High Field Scanning, perfect for claustrophobic patients and for individuals better suited to a more open scanner.
MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) is ordered by your physician to evaluate internal body structures without having to use x-ray or surgery. MRI uses the physical properties of magnetic fields, radio waves, and computers to generate images of soft tissues within the body. MRI is a non-invasive procedure and there are no known side or after effects.

Patients are asked to lie on a table and remain still for approximately 30 minutes to an hour depending on the test ordered. During the exam, a faint knocking sound will be heard, which is normal and is the operation of the imaging process. Earplugs and/ or music is provided for your comfort. The images are formed from signals emitted by tissue in the body. The MRI process captures different tissue characteristics and translates them into different contrast levels on the image.

Because the procedure is safe, radiation-free, and poses no side effects, a loved one is welcome to be with you during the study. This is especially helpful for children and elderly patients. We understand that diagnostic testing can be frightening, so our warm and compassionate staff is specially trained to care for you. Our tech is available, via an intercom system, to talk with you during the procedure.

Most patients can safely have an MRI, however, if you think you are pregnant or have any of the following, contact our diagnostic imaging center prior to your scheduled appointment: • metal fragments in the eye
• aneurysm clips in the brain
• implanted electronic devices such as a pacemaker
• inner ear implants
• metal rods in the body.

Our staff will be glad to answer any questions or concerns you may have.

The benefits of magnetic resonance imaging are vast and new applications are continually being developed through ongoing research. Software upgrades are added to the system on an ongoing basis.

High Field and Open MRI:
Both of these procedures involve using magnetism to look inside your body. MRI's are non-invasive and provide your doctor with an invaluable tool to determine a diagnosis and treatment plan. They are painless and have no known side effects. There are no restrictions on eating, taking medications, or activites before or after an MRI exam, unless directed otherwise by your physician.

Depending on your health needs, your doctor may recommend either MRI procedure. The Open MRI utilizes an "open-sided" magnet that can be more comfortable for the elderly, children, the physically challenged, patients with claustrophobia or those with larger builds.

There are no physical sensations assoc iated with MRI's, and patients can expect to hear a faint "thumping"noise during the procedure.

What do you have to do to prepare? Since magnetism is involved with both of these procedures, patients with the following conditions should avoid MRI's:

-Cardiac Pacemakers
-Aneurysm Clips
-Certain Metal Implants
-Foreign metal objects in and around eye (i.e., metal workers)
-Inferior Vena Cava Umbrellas
-Electro-mechanical aids
-Those who are pregnant

Northland Imaging provides relaxing music to listen to during your exam! The process takes around 40 minutes. Again, due to the magnetism involved in and MRI, Northland Imaging asks that all watches, jewelry, rings, bracelets, etc., to please be left at home. We also suggest that you not wear any make-up since it may contain metallic materials. We will provide a place for you to change your clothes and to store any objects you bring. A technologist will be there to guide you in all preparations.
